Description
Toe in the Water is a wide, snuggly scarf designed to complement a professional wardrobe characterised by structure and tailoring. It features a reversible fabric with an angular textural pattern and wide flat borders that behave well when worn. Because it is also extra-long, there is plenty of scarf to wear wrapped a couple of times around your shoulders.

If the dimensions I have chosen do not appeal to you, the pattern provides some guidance for altering width and/or length to suit your needs.

Audience
This pattern is appropriate for newer knitters who can knit and purl and who want practice switching between the two. It also makes a fabulous Knetflix & Knit option for more experienced knitters who enjoy a bit of something interesting that is also relaxing to knit.

Construction Overview:
You will knit two-inch-wide garter-stitch borders all the way around the scarf. In between the long-side borders, you will
work a 16-row Rib and Welt stitch pattern, repeating both horizontally and vertically. Including short-side borders, the pattern calls you to knit 720 rows.

Yarn and Tools
I chose plush, matte yarns because I wanted a thick, squishy fabric. I also chose yarns that offer good stitch definition, so it is easier to appreciate the intricate stitch pattern. I recommend a solid colour for the same reason: a variegated yarn will compete for attention with the textural pattern.

Any of the worsted-weight yarns listed, or something like them, will make a lovely scarf. As always: these are just suggestions! Knit what you like; wear what feels good!

The only required tools are 5.0mm (US 8) needs and a tapestry needle for weaving in the ends. However, a handful of stitch markers and a row counter will make your life a lot easier.
