Toler Twist
This twisted knot ear warmer is excellent for beginners and experts alike with step-by-step directions with photos and explanations, including special “beginner’s notes” explaining knitting terms and tips. Worked flat and seamed in chunky yarn, you can be warm and stylish in no time. Try it in lighter weight yarn to create a cute hairband accessory instead.
Skill Level: beginner
Materials:
• Yarn: 50-65 yards {45-60 m} Plymouth Select Chunky Merino Superwash, shown in Natural 100
If substituting yarn, look for “bulky #5” yarn or a gauge of approx. 14 stitches = 4” {10 cm}
• size US 10 {6.0 mm} needles
• tapestry/yarn needle
• 2 locking stitch markers (optional)
Sizes:
Measurements given in: Imperial {metric}
Child Medium 3.00” {8.25 cm} wide x 18” {45 cm} circumference
Child Large/Adult Small 3.00” {7.6 cm} wide x 19” {48 cm} circumference
Adult Medium 3.25” {8.25 cm} wide x 20” {50.8 cm} circumference
Adult Large 3.25” {8.25 cm} wide x 21” {53 cm} circumference
Adult Extra Large 3.5” {8.9 cm} wide x 22” {56 cm} circumference
Pattern is designed with negative ease. Choose a size smaller than your head circumference measured around the base of your head, just above the ears, and top of forehead.
Sizes indicated throughout pattern in the following order:
Child M (Child L/Adult S, Adult M, Adult L, Adult XL)
Gauge:
26 stitches x 22 rows = 4” x 4” in UNSTRETCHED 1x1 ribbed stitch (k1, p1)
Important Gauge Note: Typically gauge is obtained by washing and blocking the swatch. When blocking for this pattern, allow ribbing to “pull in.” Do not stretch the ribbing to separate the columns. This allows the fabric extra thickness for warmth.
