Tolt Cowl
This Icelandic Scarf features all the vintage Icelandic knit motifs and one star appearance - the Icelandic Horse! It is shown in this pattern performing the ‘Tolt’ which is a gait unique to only a few horse breeds around the world, the Icelandic Horse being one of them. The scarf is made out of one of the lesser known Istex Yarns - The Kambgarn, which is very soft Merino Wool, that lasts very well and is super soft.
The construction is simple: We knit a very long tube (think sock tube) on circular needles, then join the beginning to the end. Done! This is super simple, yet so effective, which means you can concentrate on your colorwork, and don’t have to worry about the construction.
This Cowl is a great project for a beginner knitter at colorwork. It is, in fact the first colorwork project I have ever knitted. don’t believe me? Here’s why:
-
It is knit continuously in the round. There is no purling in this scarf, only knit stitches. Which also means there is no ‘bad’ side, however you throw it on, it will shows a great pattern. It also means that it will be double thick, for that extra warmth in the cold Icelandic Winters!
-
I am suggesting you use very big needles (US 9 - 5.5mm). The reason why is because as a beginner at colorwork, you tend to make your stitches extra tight, and we don’t want you to end up with a tiny mess on your hands. Go big and you won’t regret it!
No weaving in ends! Hurray!!! That is because in this ‘construction’ the ends will be facing inwards of the tube, and will never be seen again once they are joined in the round. so make whatever knot you want and forget about them.
