Tommy's Blanket
My new grandson’s blanket was knitted using mitered squares (four of them) with two contrasting colors. Edge stitches for the first square were cast on using a provisional cast on. Each square is shaped using a 2 stitch decrease on the center three stitches of each right side row. The colors are alternated every two rows; the unused yarn is carried up the side and caught by the working yarn.
The next two squares (on either side of the first square) begin with a combination of provisional cast on stitches and released stitches. Both sides of the fourth square are made up of released stitches. Finally stitches for the garter edge are picked up on each side of the blanket.
I used roughly (very roughly) 5 and one half skeins of yarn. If you wanted to make the outer edging just one color, you could make the blanket with 3 skeins of one color and 2 skeins of the contrasting color.
