This is a basic “recipe” for a top-down knitted hat.

There is no gauge, needle size, yarn weight, etc., because it will all change according to the yarn, etc., chosen by the knitter.

The knitter will need to adjust the number of stitches increased based on past hats knitted.

The amount of yarn needed will be determined by weight of yarn, needles used, how long to knit the hat. I have used this method for hats that just cover the ear once. And for hats that have double coverage for the ears.

I have made baby sized hats and hats for adults with extra-large heads. The most I have ever increased to was 96 stitches with DK weight yarn on Size 5 (US).

This is just to get you past the increases and onto the “body” of the hat.

It is possible to start a design while still doing the increases. The knitter will just need to adjust the design as they go along.

Knit the hat for as long as you desire! If you want, start the ribbing just after the increases are finished. Or knit the body for a few inches and then start the ribbing. Totally up to the knitter.
