Torie's Mixed Up Socks
My youngest son is in a relationship that has brought me a new granddaughter … in point of fact, my only granddaughter. This past Christmas, I sent her a pair of slippers in worsted weight and sent her mother & my son socks in fingering weight. Next thing I know, Torie is asking could she please have socks like her mom & my son. Only other request? ALL the colors in the crayon box!!
So I went looking …. and could not find any patterns for her size in fingering weight yarn. Finally gave up & made my own pattern, which is really a formula because you can apply the pattern to any size sock - my tester made a pair of socks for her husband, size 13, I think!, while my socks so far all made for Torie. I’ll be using the concept to make socks for others, as well, though. It fits so well & is so easy to knit.
So … here is my pattern, or rather, Torie’s pattern. Feel free to apply the principle of the pattern to any size you’d like to make … just continue your cuff ribbing all the way down the back, right to the bottom of the heel. Do whatever you’d like on the front - leave it plain, use intarsia, use a pattern. I used a standard heel flap but my gusset & toe decreases are not ‘standard’. They do, however, work well but you can sub in any heel or toe you prefer.
I’m giving you what I used for Torie’s socks. If you are doing a different size, I suggest printing out the pattern, then writing in the correct stitch count / length for the size you are making to avoid mistakes.
Materials
This pattern was written to use up scraps but looks great with variegated or tonal yarn, and of course you can use solids as well. These look good with the cuff/heel/toe in a different color from the rest of the sock, as well. Change out colors as you wish - socks do not have to match exactly. In fact, I deliberately did not make any matching socks for Torie. Or at least not yet … I’m having too much fun mixing-and-matching right now!
Pattern is written for DPNs but use your preferred needles.
Materials
For Child size 8-10 abour 35 grams per sock
Size 1 needles
Tapestry needle (if you don’t knit in ends as you work, which is the better choice, imo).
Dig in the ‘Leftover Odd Balls’ bag & start the next sock!
