Tortelina the Turtle
With her big, hard shell, Tortelina is perfectly suited to be a pincushion, because she will not feel any pain through her thick protection.
This is an easy pattern that can look more advanced than it is with its ruffle around its shell and head that bends up form under from under the shell. But it only uses basic stitches! The pattern has some images for guidance in the crocheting part and a step-by-step picture guided approach for the more complicated part of the assembly. It also includes a concise text-based printer friendly version.
Skill level:
Easy
Approximate size is 5.5 cm high and 9.5 cm long, which varies based on yarn weight, hook size and the tightness of the stitches.

There are two versions of the pattern, one in English with U.S. terminology and one in Swedish.
The pattern includes an easy-to-print section with few pictures.
You will also get a compendium with descriptions and step-by-step pictures of the techniques involved and tips and tricks if you are a beginner (also two versions, English and Swedish).
Materials needed:
- 13 g lighter colour DK weight yarn for body, head and legs (I used brown/ green)
- 9 g darker colour DK weight yarn for shell (I used blue/ purple)
- Thin yarn for eyes, or safety eyes if you prefer that (I used mercerized cotton yarn, 670 m by 100 g, black and white)
- Stuffing
- 2.25 mm hook
- If crocheted eyes, 1.5 mm hook
- Darning needle
- Sewing needle to attach the eyes
I have used cotton yarn (125 m by 50 g) for the green/purple turtle and acrylic yarn (130 m by 50 g) for the brown/blue turtle. If you use another yarn, make sure to change crochet hook accordingly.
