ABOUT PATTERN
The Trail Balaclava is a knitted hood
constructed by tiny cables and sophisticated
rib details. Thanks to its cozy and slightly
loose fit, it works both on its own and in
combination with a beanie or cap worn
underneath.

Level of difficulty: Intermediate

SIZE GUIDE
The Trail Balaclava has a slightly loose fit,
therefore it fits well to an adult size head.
Slight modifications are possible to ensure a
more customized fit. It is important to try on
the hood during the process to make sure
the lengths of the sides are perfect for you.

SUGGESTED NEEDLES
3 mm / 40 cm US 2.5 / 16 in circular needle
(or a longer cable if you prefer the magic
loop technique)
4 mm / 60 cm US 6 / 24 in circular needle

Change the needle size if needed to match
the given gauge.

ADDITIONAL

  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Measuring tape

LT / LEFT TWIST
Knit the second stitch on the left needle tbl
(through the back loop) followed by the first
stitch on the left needle normally, then drop
both stitches off the needle. This changes
the order of the two stitches, and the stitch
crossing from the front slants towards the
left.

ES / EDGE STITCH
Work an edge stitch (referred to in the
pattern as ‘es’) at the beginning and end of
each row by always knitting (k) the first and
last stitch of the row, no matter which side of
the work you’re on. This creates a garter
stitch edge, which makes it easier to pick up
and knit stitches from at a later point.

WORKFLOW
The Trail Balaclava is worked top down.
You will start by casting on stitches for the
forehead, and knit flat (back and forth) on
circular needles towards the crown of the
head.

Once the top part is finished, new stitches
will be picked up from both sides, and the
main part ‘’body’’ is worked flat in a U-shape
until the length reaches the jawbones, or
your own desired length that feels right
when trying the hood on.

You will then switch to a smaller needle size,
cast on new stitches under the chin, and
work the neck in the round in 1x1 ribbing.

The last part is to pick up stitches around the
face opening with the smaller needle size,
and work in the round in 1x1 ribbing to frame
the face, and create a finished look for the
hood.
