The idea for this shawl came to mind while watching my oldest daughter running up and down the forest trails we frequent as a family in the Pacific Northwest. She has loved the outdoors since she was a small infant and hiking is absolutely one of her favorite activities.

Using a solid color, this shawl features textured patterns that invoke some of the natural elements found while hiking in the Pacific Northwest: mountains, moss, vines, and trees. The textured fabric adds interest to what is a very wearable, easy to style, triangular shawl. It is knit from the top down, featuring a garter tab cast on that continues into a garter edge along the top and an Icelandic bind-off that blends perfectly into the garter edging along the bottom.

This shawl is available in one size that measures roughly 57” (144.78 cm) wide and 24.75” (62.86 cm) tall while blocking, but it will relax into a slightly smaller size. Adding tassels to the tips can add length and weight that help the shawl stay in place, although adding tassels will require more yarn than stated above.

The sample was knit using Magpie Fibers Swanky Sock in the Tactical colorway. A budget friendly alternative that still has the qualities of a luxury MCN yarn is KnitPick’s Capretta Superwash yarn.

The sample used approximately 620 yards (566.93 m) of yarn + 40-60 yards (36.58-54.84 m) extra for tassels, depending on tassel size.

Additional materials needed for this pattern include: 4 stitch markers, scissors, tapestry needle, t-pins for blocking, and blocking mats (optional).
