Trailing Fern Lace II
I converted an edging to a strip from 1902 Butterick’s Fancy and Practical Knitting, p.15, so it could be used as a scarf or an afghan strip. There are just 34 stitches and a 10-row repeat. At the end of every odd-numbered row, there’ll be 36 stitches. The even-numbered rows will restore the 34 stitches. I fixed some errors in the original pattern. I also added a couple of background stitches to the center panel to give the “ferns” a little more breathing room.
The swatch is 4 inches wide at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, SSK, p2tog and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
50 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make 10 inches of a 32-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
