What ist is called? Trapezium or Trapezoid? The right answer is Trapezillium! But what is a Trapezillium?

Trapezillium is a quirky yet relatively easy to knit shawl made with two yarns. It is fully reversible. One side will highlight Yarn A and the other will highlight Yarn B. Accordingly, you will need two contrasting yarns of the same weight: two solids, one solid or semi solid combined with a color gradient, or two color gradients that go well together as a pair but that are distinctive enough to make out the individual modules – all these combinations work well together.

The amount of yarn you need will of course depend on the tightness of your knitting and the weight of your yarn. The size will depend on the numer of modules you want to knit. Trapezillium is composed of two halves. Simply knit the first half until you have reached the desired width and length and/or until you have used up to 50% of your yarn. You can use any yarn weight and needles you like. Nevertheless, there are two sizes with different aspect ratios available: Medium with the aspect ratio of 1:4 and Large with the aspect ratio of 1:5.

I prefer to knit a bit tighter with thinner needles and I used 600y/560m of each color for a Medium Version (made with Schoppel Laceball 100 Waldmeister using two strands at a time to achieve a longer color gradient combined with Wollmeise Pure Leicht - length diagonal line: 60”/152cm - depth 14.5”/37cm. I knitted a Large Version with Wollbonbon Merino 4 ply Eiszeit combined with Wollmeise Pure Gipfelstürmer 660y/600m each - length diagonal line: 75”/191cm - depth 14.5”/37cm.

Trapezillium is a modular knit but there is no seaming involved as you will join all the modules as you go. You will find photo tutorials on all the necessary techniques for joining the modules.

The general principle is fairly easy and you won’t have to look at the instructions once you have knitted the first few modules. However all instructions are given in written and charted form in case you want to refer to them.

This makes Trapezillium a doable project for most knitters - definitely perfect for tv-knitting
