Cables of alternating lengths wind their way up to the crown in this unisex hat design. They are worked diagonally across six stitches. Every fourth round, the beginning of round shifts to create the left leaning slant of the cable braids. The hat comes in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large.

Sizes: SMALL - 15 “/ 38 cm circumference, 7.5 “/ 19 cm height; to fit head circumference of 19-20 “/ 48-51 cm (Child of 3-5 years)

MEDIUM - 16 “/ 41 cm circumference, 8.25 “/ 21 cm height; to fit head circumference of 21-22 “/ 53-56 cm (Teen/Adult)

LARGE - 17 “/ 43 cm circumference, 8.75 “/ 22 cm height; to fit head circumference of 23-24 “/ 58-61 cm (Adult)

Materials: 136 (163, 174) yd / 124 (149, 159) m of Worsted weight yarn
(The samples are knit out of Cascade 220 Superwash Merino (100 % Merino - 220 yd / 201 m per 100 g ball)

Needles: 16 “ / 40 cm circular needles in sizes US 6 / 4 mm and US 4 / 3.5 mm

One set of DPNs in size US 6 / 4 mm for small circumference knitting (or long circular for knitting magic loop)

Gauge: 25.5 sts and 30 rnds = 4 “/ 10 cm in 2 x 1 Ribbing on US 4 / 3.5 mm needles (measured unstretched)

Instructions: The pattern is fully written. The cable pattern is given in chart form additionally.

kfb knit front back

k2tog knit 2 together

p2tog purl 2 together

Each size pattern is given in its own section, and each section contains both written and charted directions for the cable pattern.

Special Notes: You might achieve variations of the sizes by using smaller/bigger needles and lighter/heavier yarn weight.

For example, knit in Fingering weight yarn you can easily turn it into a baby hat.

You might also use more than one colour for a contrast colour brim, for example, or add a pom-pom. (Instructions for colour change and pom-pom making are not included in the pattern)
