Trawler Cowl
This cowl features twisted stitches and cables to add interest and texture to the knitting process, interspersed with seed stitch, moss stitch and bands of garter to give small frequent “restful” stitches to provide ease between them.
The result is an engaging knit and a cowl full of traditional elements and cosy goodness, which is both lovely to look at and easy & comfortable to wear.
Beginning with a provisional cast on, this piece is knit flat, the charts worked through and then uses three-needle bind off to join it into a loop, hidden in a garter stitch section.
Knitting skills & techniques used:
Advanced Intermediate: Provisional Cast on/unzipping, knitting, purling. 4 stitch Cables worked held both at back and front (C4B & C4F) to form the pattern are performed as well as Right and Left leaning twists (RT & LT). These regularly worked rope style cables, are worked over eight stitches, which is a repeated theme in which to work most of the stitch patterns, sticking to the multiples of eight.
Materials:
Requires approx 371 metres / 406 yards DK weight yarn.
The following yarn usage amounts are an approximate guide.
The yardage amounts shown are a little over what was actually used in view of rounding up to give you several grams room regarding what’s required:Whilst any DK weight yarn with good stitch definition will work fine, for the sample I used:
West Yorkshire Spinners Jacob DK, 100g, 246 yards / 225 meters, 100% Wool - Jacob, in the Light Grey colourway
Needles: 4mm / US 6 (40cm cord length minimum)
Notions: Cable needle / DPN, 6 stitch markers, tapestry needle / crochet hook for weaving ends
Gauge:
25 sts & 40 rows in Garter Stitch, 4” (10 cm), with 4 mm / US 6 needles (after blocking)
Whilst gauge is not essential it can affect finished measurements / yarn usage.
Finished measurements:
Circumference 23” / 58 cm Width 6.5” / 17 cm
