Tree and Star Hat
My Tree and Star hat design is a remake of my original Sea Urchin Hat pattern but this time, I have used Jamieson & Smith Woolbrokers 2ply Jumper weight / 4ply/fingering yarn. I have also used different size needles to create a more slouchy hat than the original beanie shape and there are more details in this pattern to help you achieve the look you want.
Yarn:Jamieson & Smith, 2ply Jumper Weight, 4ply/fingering (2ply refers to the plys in the yarn, this wool is a 4ply Woollen Spun thickness) 25g ball approximately 105m/114yds. 100% Pure Shetland Wool
9 Balls of J&S 2 ply Jumper weight yarn are used - all colours are listed in the pattern.
You can copy the pattern to the exact stitch and colour, or you can use it as a springboard to develop your own ideas by choosing your colours or even a different tree and star motif to the one I have chosen to incorporate into my hat - you can make this hat your design too.
The bright blues and pink colours in this new design are inspired by the blue skies and prolific, blousy cherry blossoms that have festooned this city during the entire month of April.
Needles: - 1 x 40cm circular needle UK 2:75mm (US2) needles for the rib and one 60cm UK 3mm circular needle for the body of the hat –(DPN’s) (US 3) - You will need 5 DPN’s needles to finish off the crown when the knitting gets too tight for the circular (Plus one set of 2:75mm regular needles to cast on – optional)
Size: - Circumference 22inches around the head and 9 ¼ inches from top point of crown to start of rib. You can make this hat smaller by using UK 2:75mm to knit the body and 2:5mm to knit the rib, this will make more of a beanie shape.
Tension:- 33 rows and 32 stitches to 10 cm measured over the motif pattern using UK 3mm needles
I hope that you will enjoy using these bright new colours to knit this hat. If you want to experiment with smaller needles and different yarns, as I have over the years, you’ll have a lot of fun with the results. I look forward to seeing your hats.
