Tres Tosh Cowl
The Uno, DOS, Tres Cowl is one of Jimmy Beans Wool’s most popular free patterns to date. The original version used a sport weight yarn and smaller needles, but we wanted something a little more warm and squishy for fall and winter. Enter the Tres Tosh Cowl! This version still uses three different colors and a simple stitch pattern, but we’ve bulked it up a bit with worsted weight Tosh Vintage Short Skeins (regular skeins work too!) and larger needles! You can knit a short version, similar to the original Uno, Dos, Tres Cowl, or the longer version pictured here…or anything in between if you prefer to customize! Choose any three of your favorite Tosh hues for a simple and classic cowl you can wear year round!
Materials:
-3 skeins of Madelinetosh Tosh Vintage Short Skeins (197 yds – 100% Superwash Merino Wool) -or- regular Tosh Vintage (200 yds 100% Superwash Merino Wool) in 3 different colors. Shown in Vintage Short Skeins: Dirty Panther (A), Charcoal (B) & Silver Fox (C))
-US Size 7- 32” or 40” circular needle
-1 stitch marker
-darning needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
19 sts and 38 rounds= 4” in Half Linen Stitch pattern
Gauge is not crucial in this pattern, but you’ll want to keep an eye on your Color A ball to make sure that you will have enough to finish a final repeat and bind off. Otherwise, you can pretty much keep knitting until your yarn runs out to maximize your yardage. The cowl pictured used all but a couple of yards of Color A and a little less of Colors B & C at the gauge given.
Approximate Finished Measurements:
Long version (pictured): 9” tall x 58” circumference
Short Version: 11” tall x 25” circumference
The size of this cowl is easily customizable. You could cast on fewer stitches (in multiples of 2) to create a shorter cowl. The double looped cowl pictured used almost every last bit of the Vintage Short Skeins in the Dirty Panther (Color A), but the pattern is intended for you to continue knitting until you either reach a height you like, or until you run out of yarn. Whichever comes first. If you knit the short version, you should be able to get 2 cowls out of the 3 skeins of yarn.
