Tri-Corner Tam
This tam is knit to fit from the top down; you’ll determine how many stitches you need for the brim as you work. You can use any number of yarn weights and needle sizes to obtain great results. Just make sure the background color yarn is the same or a lighter weight then the foreground color.
Hand-paint yarns shine here. For the second color, pick a yarn that compliments the hand painted yarn, but is not one of the colors in the hand paint; otherwise the tam won’t have the graphic lines.
The tam is knit to 14” and then felted and blocked on a 12” plate or frisbee. Note that the tam is not felted until the stitch definition disappears, but lightly fulled, just until the stitches begin to meld and the fabric feels solid.
12” double-point needles work wonderfully, but are hard to find. If your double-pointed needles are shorter, the pattern will also require a 16” circular needle and stitch markers to separate the repeats.
Yarns:
Hand-paint that will felt
Solid color that will felt, color different from those in the hand-paint
