Do not be deceived by the name; Tri Hard and Tri Harder are actually pretty easy once you understand the stitch. A photo tutorial for the stitch is included. It is basically like knitting stockinette with more steps. This becomes mindless, drool-on-yourself, TV knitting. Tri Hard is a very deep symmetrical triangle and Tri Harder is an asymmetrical triangle, packaged together because I know people have strong opinions about triangle shapes!

Both versions of the triangle scarf are knit from at least two skeins of Malabrigo Rios (420 yards). Though the stitch used resembles lace, it is actually a stretchy mesh created by knitting elongated knit stitches in one row, and criss-crossing the purl stitches in the next. The edge stitches are slipped stitches with extra slack to create a neat edge that works with the stretchy fabric of the main body.

The main body of Tri Hard is knit using a simple two-row repeat. Tri Harder is exactly the same as Tri Hard but asymmetrical, using a slightly “harder” (but still very simple) four-row repeat. Both scarves are completed by knitting some short rows and adding an applied border, then grafting six stitches.

The cast on and bind off border portion are identical for Tri Hard and Tri Harder. Only the middle portion is different.

In my opinion, Tri Hard is best worn cowboy style around the neck either folded in half into a smaller double thick triangle with the ends tucked, or gathered up and wrapped around the neck. In the event of being seated by the drafty door at a restaurant,Tri Hard can also be worn as a big shawl!

Tri Harder can be worn as a scarf, but also as a big meshy shawl that doesn’t point at your tush.

Samples:

Taupe version was made with two skeins of Malabrigo Rios in the Whole Grain colorway on size 9 (5.5mm) needles. This sample measures approximately 61 inches by 36 inches several weeks post blocking.

The golden brown version was made by alternating two very different skeins of Malabrigo Rios in the Glitter colorway. This sample was knitted on size 7 (4.5mm) needles and measure approximately 52 inches by 33 inches post blocking.

The red asymmetrical version (Tri Harder) was made from two skeins of Malabrigo Rios in the Cumparsita colorway on size 8 (5mm) needles. This sample measures approximately 62 inches by 31.5 inches a couple weeks post blocking.
