In the SciFi movie miniseries, Alice Sir Charles Eustice Futhering Gaye le Malvoy the Third, White Knight and Guardian of the Curtsey, gets caught out in his skivvies. So, to honor the Brave Old Knight, I’ve designed a new pair of socks based on an antique knitting pattern!

Every Knight needs a horse, even if it’s only a couple of coconuts a’ la’ Monty Python! My steed’s horseshoe lace pattern surrounds the top of the sock in much the same manner! ….”Good-O!”
The modified ribbing on the sock is reminiscent of the texture I remember on the long-johns I wore as a child, and combines both regular and twisted knit stitches in the rib columns.
The “French Heel” was adapted from the antique sock knitting pattern found in Beehive Booklet #22 found at antiquepattern.org. Additional assistance was found at www.ehow.com

This pattern starts out with a tubular cast-on. There are several different ways to accomplish this cast-on, with the method I’ve described being the easiest one, in my opinion. The directions I have given are correct, and are not missing any steps. Please follow the directions as written, and you can simply remove the provisional cast-on row any time after you have finished the joining row. THERE WILL BE NO LIVE STITCHES when you remove the cast-on row, I promise!
