This sweater is a fun exercise in matching stripes in a self-striping yarn. Self-striping yarns present some challenges because garment pieces of different widths will produce different width stripes and different balls of yarn don’t always begin at the same place in the color sequence. Our sweater is knit from the bottom up, so the “trick” is to get the sleeves to match the body where they join at the base of the raglan shaping and also to get the sleeves to match each other and have stripes of the same thickness as the rest of the sweater.

Note on Gauge and Needle Size
Gauge can be somewhat tricky with the double rib. I found that a US 10.5 needle (6.5 mm) gave me nearly the same gauge as the 7.00 mm needle but the rib wasn’t as stretchy as I wanted. A US size 11 (8 mm) produced a sloppy stitch.

Note on Sizing
Size is hard to measure because of the extremely elastic nature of the 2x2 rib. It will stretch to fit a multitude of bodies (from a 10 year old up to a medium adult). The sleeves can be cuffed to desired length or rows removed from the bottom of the sleeve to obtain a shorter sleeve length. It looks sort of shapeless not on a person and takes on their shape when worn.

Note on Yarn Quantity
Since we will be matching stripe sequences in this project, it may be advisable to purchase an extra skein of yarn (6 in this case). Sometimes these skeins have knots where the sequence is interrupted and some colorways have sequences that are longer than 1 skein so some colors may not be present in a particular skein.
