Other materials needed are 4 buttons and something to slide inside the I-cord handles to make them stronger I had chain links at home but you can also use rope/cord or any type of handles you like.

If you want to use a different weight of yarn just remember the needle size makes a difference in the stiffness. This is a project that you may not want to be drapey :o)
