Description:
- This fun design was conceived right after the Happy Scrappy Hat. While I still love that pattern, sometimes coming up with five different colors that all go together is a challenge. So, I tweaked the pattern a little bit, and LOVE the outcome! Especially the top - there’s something so striking about those vertical stripes, and the triple color portion reminds me of confetti. Much like the Happy Scrappy Hat, the Triple Threat Toque is a fantastic scrap yarn buster. I often will triple strand a size 4 yarn for the second and third colors, but I personally love to use Wool Ease Thick and Quick for the brim. The wool blends seem to have a “muscle memory” and retain the shape of the brim better.
- Another benefit of using the triple strand method (besides using up more yardage) is that it matches perfectly when it comes time for that triple color section at the top. All you need to match is the brim color, so keep that in mind when choosing your three colors. Who knows though, maybe you’re super lucky and have coordinating size 4 yarns that match perfectly with your size 6 yarns!
- This is a longer beanie, but fits comfortably snug against the head. If you aren’t a fan of the longer/slouchier style of hat, I’ve included directions for a more fitted version. I personally love it topped with a pom - it makes the slouch look even better, in my opinion. Have fun with it, and I can’t wait to see what color combos you make!
Skills:
- I would rate this as a medium beginner pattern, due to the color work
- If you loathe weaving in ends, this may not be the pattern for you
Size:
- Finished beanie fits an average adult woman’s head, 21 to 22 in / 53 - 56 cm
- 8.5 in wide x 11 in tall / 21.5 cm wide x 28 cm tall
- Measurements taken from item laid flat and unstretched, after steam blocking.
Materials:
- US 15 / 10 mm circular needles OR needles to
obtain gauge. If your swatch is too small, bump up
your needle size. If it’s too large, size down needles
- Color 1: 40 - 45 yards / 64 - 72 g size 6 / super bulky yarn (Recommended: Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick or Lion Brand Hometown USA)
- Color 2 : 15 - 20 yards / 24 - 32 g size 6 / super bulky yarn
- Color 3: 15 20 yards / 24 - 32 g size 6 / super bulky yarn
- Color Combo: 10 -15 yards / 16-24 g of EACH strand of coordinating size 4 / worsted yarn
- Yardage is approximate - your tension/gauge can affect how much yarn is used
