Trittico
“The inspiration for this design came from the religious artefacts found in historical Ireland, namely, simple Celtic crosses and the intriguing recurrence of items in groups or multiples of three.
Wanting to recreate the symbolism of these forms, I deliberately went with 3 motifs around the Hat that are connected by a continuous slipped stitch line that circles the entire Hat. Each motif is marked by a vertical line, from the crown to the brim, that intersects the horizontal line at even points, creating the cross-linked design. The vertical line was a little harder to achieve and it adds a surprising twist!
This feature of using geometry to create the symbolism sits perfectly with the sideways construction of the Hat and the techniques and maths involved.”
This Hat is worked sideways as a series of panels; 6 panels in total. Two panels are worked consecutively then cast-off. Stitches are then picked up and the next two panels are worked. The process is repeated once more. Finally, the first and last panel are grafted together.
