Triyang
At any size, in any weight yarn (no gauge swatch needed!), with or without stripes, Triyang can be made in really different styles with different kinds of yarns/colors.
The versatile garter stitch shawl is made up of three long, narrow triangle sections, worked modularly together to make one large, slightly asymmetrical triangle shape.
Everything is worked with combinations of increases, decreases, and short rows, joining the sections as you go; there are no picked up stitches and no extra finishing steps. Cast on just 2 stitches, bind off none at all!
There are extra customization options if you want your project even more personalized, like making it as a kerchief, adding ties, or adjusting to maximize your yardage.
A technique tutorial is included for German short rows, and detailed notes are given for striping, for using your yardage, and for how the construction works.
The pattern includes all this info for it you want/need it, but the pattern itself is on just one page and is a pretty simple, fun garter stitch knit!
Sizing:
The pattern gives measurements for sizes {small, medium, large} - lengths of approx {50, 65, 80} inches / {130, 165, 200} cm, before blocking - but the size is determined by where the first section is stopped, which can be anywhere. The top edge will be double the length of the first section edge, making it super easy to make your piece any size you want, no need to stick to those given sizes.
You can also stop your first section based on your yardage, weighing it to maximize yardage used and avoid running out of yarn, making whatever size you can get out of the yarn you have.
You need:
- enough yarn in any weight, 1 colorway or multiple for striping; you can size your piece based on using up whatever yardage you have by weighing it
- -bulky: 175-500 yards / 160-460 meters
- -worsted: 250-700 yards / 230-640 meters
- -sport: 350-950 yards / 320-870 meters
- -fingering: 425-1200 yards / 390-1100 meters
- needles sized to match yarn - a circular needle 32”/80cm or longer for holding the stitches
- a stitch marker
- optional: a postal or kitchen scale
Once you pick out yarn and needles to use, you can treat the first few inches of the piece as a swatch for checking if you like the fabric you’re getting - when you can see how it’s knitting up, either keep going, or change your needle size and start over. If you’re unsure, wash and block it on the needle cord to see how it looks/feels. Since there’s no cast-on, you won’t waste a bunch of work if you have to start over.
The striped off-white & grey sample is size large, in Anzula Cole aran weight yarn (Au Natural and Pewter), size US 9 (5.5mm) needles, for a garter stitch gauge of approx 12 sts and 26 rows per 4 inches / 10 cm. Two skeins each color were used; 590 yards / 540 meters used total, 304 yards / 278 meters Au Natural, 286 yards / 262 meters Pewter. The differing stripes pattern used on this piece is detailed in the pattern.
The gradient sample is size small, in Canon Hand Dyes William Merino Gradient light fingering weight yarn (Blue to Green), size US 4 (3.5mm) needles, for a loose garter stitch gauge of approx 23 sts and 46 rows per 4 inches / 10 cm. One skein was used; 433 yards / 396 meters used.
The 3-color blocked sample is extra small, in Knitted Wit Targhee Shimmer worsted weight yarn, with the pattern modification for using three equal skeins (in this case, they were mini-skeins) - 176 yards / 161
meters used total, size US 8 (5mm) needles. Instructions for the braided ties are given in the pattern.
(If you use three full skeins with this kind of color blocking, you’ll get a nice large sized shawl!)
The little orange sample is the small buttoning kerchief modification, in Knitted Wit Welterweight Rambouillet sport weight, 67 yards / 61 meters used, size US 6 (4mm) needles.
The white and multi-color striped sample is a bit smaller than the small size, in handspun alpaca and various recycled hand-dyed yarn mini-balls, all around worsted-aran weight, 2x2 row stripes (yardage unknown), US 10.5 (6.5mm) needles.
Make a Triyang customized to your vision or your yarn stash - it can be so different with light versus heavy weights, squishy wool versus more drapey fibers, bold stripes or color blocks versus a single semi-solid or a slowly shifting gradient yarn.
