Inspired by the bright stripy tents and architectural details found in my favourite local seaside town, Trouville-Sur-Mer, in Normandy. Hand knit your yoke to give a hand-crafted look and seamless fit over the shoulders and use the speed and precision of your machine to knit the crisp contrasting stripes on the body and sleeves.

A great mid-season sweater for an evening drink on the promenade!

CONSTRUCTION
Knit top-down, you will start by casting on the neck stitches and hand-knitting a seamless yoke, gradually making increases to shape the shoulders. Once the the yoke is finished, the sleeves and body are separated and attached to your machine and the striped front body, back body, and sleeves, are knit in turn. It is designed as a loosely tapered and cropped sweater or cardigan (just make sure you knit in a steek at the yoke if you want to make the cardigan). You can also easily tailor the length to suit your preference. The sleeves are full and gather at the cuff. Textural details include occasional rows of purl stitch as well as small bobbles around the neckline and hand-finished cuffs.

MEASUREMENTS
Body circumference: 93 (100, 110, 120, 130) cm / 36.5 (39.75, 43.5, 47.25, 51.25) inches.
Body length: 24 (26, 28.5, 30.5, 33) cm /9.5 (10.25, 11.25, 12, 13) inches.
Sleeve length (from armpit-cuff): 43 (43, 45, 47, 49.5) cm / 17 (17, 18, 18.5, 19.5) inches.
Sleeve circumference: 29 (33, 35, 37, 40) cm / 11.5 (13, 14, 14.5, 16) inches.
Yoke depth: 23.5 (24.5, 25, 26.5, 27.5) cm/ 9.25 (9.25, 10, 10.5, 10.75) inches.

MACHINE AND GAUGE
Knitted on a standard-gauge Silver Reed / Knitmaster / Empisal
Main Tension for stripes (on 0): 8
Machine-knit Gauge: 26 stitches and 40 rows to 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches)
Hand knit Gauge in Fair Isle: 26 stitches and 36 rows to 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches)
Your hand knitting and machine gauge should be similar in width- it’s always best to do swatching using both techniques and change needles/adjust your machine gauge as necessary.

METERAGE NEEDED
MC (oatmeal) 600 (700, 800, 900, 1000) metres
CC (orange) 600 (700, 800, 900, 1000) metres
You will also need about 50 metres of 7 contrasting colours for the yoke.
Note on yoke yarn
My sample uses oddments of left-overs from past projects. I chose tones of reds, pinks and oranges to reflect the colours I love found on the brick buildings in Trouville. Some yarns are slightly thicker than others, some are hairy, some are super wash. I like this mix of textures and it’s a great way to use up yarn.

YARN
Z. Hinchcliffe & sons 2/17 Lambswool, 2 strands held together from Uppingham yarns (wools.co.uk). Front page photo uses ‘Linen’ (MC) and ‘Inferno’ (CC).
Or any super-fine or fingering-weight yarn that knits to a similar gauge.

MATERIALS
For the ribbing (if doing by hand): 1 x pair of size 2.25 mm (US 1, UK 13) straight needles.
For the yoke: 1 x size 2.75 mm (US 2, UK 12) circular needle (60-80 cm long , for ease of working yoke stitches) OR needles to get gauge.
8 stitch holders.
Stitch marker.
Tapestry needle for sewing up.
7 (8, 9, 10, 11) 15mm buttons if making the cardigan.
