Tryphinia's Shawl
It’s 1880 and a young woman named Tryphinia has just met her beau Daniel. She takes out her favorite knitting book and finds a nice shawl pattern. This woman is my great-grandmother and I can imagine her knitting this, dreaming of wearing this on her wedding day.
Tryphinia’s shawl is adapted from a shawl pattern in “The Lady’s Assistant for Executing Useful and Fancy Designs in Knitting, Netting and Crochet Work” by Mrs. Gaugain 1863. I translated the pattern into modern terminology and re-wrote it so that you could use stitch markers between the repeats (the original had you moving your stitch markers every row). I also didn’t make it as large as the original.
Yarn: I used 5 balls of Lana Grossa Meilenweit which is a lace weight yarn, 50g 210m balls; color Ecru; or 1050m of any lace or fingering weight yarn should work.
Needles: I used US 2 (3mm) circular needles, and a US 7 (4.5mm) for the bind off.
Notions: lots of stitch markers for the repeats and one a different color to mark the center spine.
Finished measurements: 63” (160cm) wide-wingspan; 62” (158cm) deep-down the spine.
Skill level: advanced lace knitting, lace pattern is worked on both the right and wrong sides.
Pattern is available in English only and uses US knitting terms. Pattern is written only, no charts.
PS: Tryphinia and Daniel were married for over 40 years, had 7 children and countless grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc.
