Fiona Alice’s latest design for Loop, “Tuli,” was inspired by a bonfire celebration of the Finnish summer solstice. Translated from the Finnish language, the name means “fire”- paying homage to the classic Fireflowers pattern which has been modified here. There are multiple combinations of garter and slipped stitches used throughout this design. The construction allows “Tuli” to be completely reversible: with a simple flip of the cowl, there is a brand new texture to show off!

MATERIALS
Yarn: The Uncommon Thread BFL Singles (4ply / fingering weight; 100% superwash Bluefaced Leicester wool; 400m / 437yds per 100g skein)
MC: Tea Smoked; 1 skein
Note: The sample shown used 92g of MC so it is important to check you tension and adjust the needle size as necessary. If you find you’re running short of yarn towards the end of the pattern you can end a row earlier.
Snail Yarn Gradient Mini Set (4ply / fingering weight; 100% superwash Merino wool; 366m / 400yds per 100g set split over 5 x 20g mini skeins)
CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, CC5: Caffe Latte; 1 set
Note: CC1 is the darkest shade gradually getting lighter as you work through CC2, CC3, CC4, to the lightest shade, CC5.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
3mm (UK 11/US 21⁄2) circular needle, 40cm (16in) length Spare circular needle in similar size
Smooth scrap yarn in a similar weight to working yarn for provisional cast on
3mm (or similar) crochet hook, if using this method of provisional cast on
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle

TENSION
25 sts and 52 rows to 10cm (4in) over Fireflowers pattern on 3mm needles after blocking.
24 sts and 56 rows to 10 cm (4 in) over garter stitch on 3mm needles after blocking.
Take time to check your tension and adjust the needle size accordingly to ensure an accurate finish.

PATTERN NOTES
The cowl is worked in the round and on completion is folded in half by bringing one end inside the other before grafting together; this creates a double-layered and double-sided cowl that has an incredibly cosy finish.
Tuli uses nearly all of the suggested yarns listed above so it is important to check your tension.
The shade used in the pattern rounds is indicated after the round number; eg. Round 1 (CC1) means work round 1 in contrast colour 1, Round 3 (MC) means work round 3 in Main Colour. If a shade is not given then work in MC. There is no need to break MC when you join a CC – just carry the yarn loosely up the inside.
The stitch count fluctuates when working rounds 1-5 and 13-17 of the Fireflowers Pattern.
