Tulip Mood is a semicircle-shaped lace shawl knitted from the top down. The design was inspired by the Tulpenmotiven pattern published in Kunststricken, 807 (1963).

The pattern includes charts and pattern instructions.

SKILL LEVEL: from intermediate to advanced.

TOTAL NUMBER OF ROWS: 142

Lace-weight natural fibers yarns will be perfect for this knitting project. Gauge is not crucial and can be changed to fit the desired yarn. You may need to adjust the needle size and yardage needed if using a different weight yarn. Your shawl may end up being larger or smaller depending on the weight of the yarn and your individual way of knitting.

MATERIALS USED:

  • A luxury Italian blend of 50% royal baby alpaca, 30% merino, 20% silk; 800 m 875 yds / 100 g. The sample shown used 640 m 700 yds, or about 80 grams of yarn.

  • Size 2.5 mm US 1.5 circular needles;

  • Size 2 mm crochet hook for binding off and provisional cast on, and waste yarn.

You will also need stitch markers to outline repeats, a cable needle (optional), and a tapestry needle to weave in ends (optional).

FINISHED SIZE: 70 cm deep and 170 cm wide (27 ½ x 67″), measured after wet blocking.

All charts show only the RS (odd-numbered) rows. Read the charts FROM RIGHT TO LEFT. The pattern repeat is outlined in bold red. On the WS rows, purl every stitch (except for the edge stitches). There are also special stitches, please consult the Key Legend.

The shawl shown was made with 5 repeats of the pattern (This also applies to the knitting instructions). You can make 6 repeats bearing in mind that the finished size of your shawl will considerably increase, as well as yardage needed. The shape of your shawl will also change radically.
