The Tundra Solstice Socks are inspired by the beauty of the Arctic landscape. In the depths of polar winters, the twilight makes the white landscape glow an eerie deep purple, against which the white-furred animals like Arctic Foxes (Vulpes lagopus) and Polar Bears (Ursus maritimus) look like ghostly, glowing figures in the frigid landscape, rather than the camouflaged hunters they should be.

Pattern Description

Tundra Solstice is a straightforward heavyweight sock, perfect for keeping out the chill of winter and showing off beautiful yarn at the same time. Quick to knit and with just enough patterning to keep it interesting, these extra-thick toe-up socks have a simple elongated-stitches texture that is mirrored on the right and left socks. They feature a rounded short row heel using no-holes short rows and a 2x2 rib cuff.

This pattern requires the knitter to be able to knit a small circumference in the round (either on double-pointed needles or your preferred technique for socks) and clearly explains all techniques required. Within the pattern you will find links to useful video tutorials as well, so the pattern is easily accessible to an intermediate knitter.

Yarn Requirements and Sizing

Sizes available: Unisex Adult Small (Medium, Large, XL) for foot circumferences of 18 (20.5, 23, 25.5) cm / 7 (8, 9, 10) inches. The foot lengths are adjustable.

These socks can be worked either with heavy DK weight sock yarn or with two strands of light fingering weight sock yarn held together.

Yarn requirements for heavy DK weight sock yarn: 180 (200, 230, 250) m / 200 (220, 250, 275) yards

Yarn requirements for two strands of fingering weight sock yarn held together: 360 (400, 460, 500) m / 400 (440, 500, 550) yards

This pattern is designed with multicoloured yarns in mind, but the surface texture makes them interesting in any colourway. Choose a multicoloured light fingering weight sock yarn for a unique marled effect!

These socks are rated 3/5 — Intermediate — on my sock pattern difficulty scale. This is because while they have wide charts, they only require a few types of stitches.
