The pattern assumes a basic understanding of the afghan stitch or simple tunisian crochet. That is the stitch used in this blanket, with one variation: I made triple crochet (tc) stitches to form the cables. I used single crochet to join the panels.

As you can see from the brightly colored blanket, this design works well in squares, as well as an entire single-piece blanket.

Gauge is not critical for this pattern. I used a K hook and two strands of sport-weight yarn held together.

For a triple crochet: yarn over (yo) twice, insert hook behind vertical loop of tunisian stitch two rows below (see photo close-ups). Yo, draw through 2 loops, yo, draw through last 2 loops, leaving last loop on hook.
