Turkdean in Gloucestershire is the location of a dramatic Romano-British villa complex, which is one of the largest ever found in Britain. Time Team spent three days excavating the site on live television in August 1997, after the landowner and a local amateur archaeologist both noticed linear parch marks in a field. Plaster walls, coins, and the discovery of a bath house plunge pool proved the villa was of high status.
At the end of the last day, geophysical data showed that the site continued on, and Time Team returned in October 1998 to spend three more days investigating. Notably, the team were able to trace the course of a Roman stone culvert, through which spring water was still flowing!
These socks are asymmetrical and feature a Strong-style heel. Designed to play nicely with self-striping yarn, they knit up surprisingly fast.
The Aston Project was named in honour of Prof. Mick Aston, a regular member of Channel Four’s Time Team. As I watched episode after episode of Mick wearing all sorts of stripy jumpers, gloves and hats, the concept for the project came to me: sock patterns made just for self-striping yarn!
Turkdean was featured on Time Team in season 5, episode 4 and season 6, episode 9.
A big thank you to michamade for the German translation!
