Turku Beanie
The “Turku Beanie” was named in honor of the city of Turku, Finland. My child, Aaro, is currently spending a semester studying at the University of Turku, fulfilling a dream to return to their grandfather’s native country.
The blue and white shades of color bring to mind the colors of snow, ice and the dark blue twilight sky of a January afternoon in Finland, when a stranded wool beanie is just what you need to stay warm!
This pattern has been tech-edited and test knit.
Model is wearing Size Small; her head circumference is 22”
Two Sizes include Size Small (Child, Age 10 to Adult Female Small) and Medium/Large (Adult Female Medium/Large) with detailed guidance on sizing and fit. Fits head circumferences 20” (51 cm) to 23” (58 cm).
Turku is worked in the round from the brim up. Start with the smaller needles and make a K1P1 ribbed brim. Change to larger needles for the body. Use a stranded knitting technique and follow the color chart to create the body of the hat. There’s a separate chart for crown decreases.
If you’re new to stranded knitting, the motifs and color pattern may look complex, but actually are easier than you think. Two colors are worked at at time. Links to my video tutorials on stranded knitting are provided, and pattern support is available! You can contact me with any questions or comments.
Gauge: 22 sts= 4” (10 cm) and 12 rnds= 2” (5 cm) in gauge swatch of rnds 9-23, worked in the round and wet blocked, using larger needles.
Choose your own colors for the Turku Beanie if you like! I’d love to see what you come up with, so don’t forget to upload your project pictures to Ravelry!
Happy Winter Knitting!
