This blanket is part of my „Turning roads“ series with many more designs to come!
This blanket is a simple and incredibly meditative to knit. It is the perfect project for brioche beginners, and for more experienced knitters. Simple in construction, this blanket lets your yarns shine and your mind rest. You’ll be amazed at how quickly this project will fly off your needles! It is really snuggly, making it the perfect gift for a baby and an excellent present for a baby shower.

Turning Roads Blanket uses the same motif as my Turning Roads Hat, showl ( a combination of a shawl and cowl), sweater and maybe even more… Because it is a really fun and interesting motif. The blanket works well for either gender and is completely unique. It is so versatile it can be used as a wrap / blanket / bedspread or even a folded shawl; it is totally adaptable. It could be an elegant addition to your home decor. Gather together your favorite sports, fingering or other weight yarn and knit the brioche blanket of your dreams. Be warned – brioche is addictive!

CONSTRUCTION

Turning Roads Blanket is a one-piece blanket worked from the center out counterpane style, in the round, and begins with Emily Ocker’s Cast On. This cast on allows the yarn tail to be pulled tight, all but eliminating the hole at the center. It is a square, worked from the center, growing out to the edges. Although it was designed as a blanket, it would also make a lovely folded shawl.
There are twelve increases in each increase round, and it is finished with an I-cord edging. The blanket has six identical sections, and using stitch markers will help you to keep track of the increases. It is worked on a circular needle (or maybe even two or three) to accommodate the large number of stitches.

For brioche newbies, Turning Roads Blanket could be your first brioche project, as the pattern is full of detailed explanations and lots of video links that show all the stitches and helpful hints. The pattern includes both fully written round-by-round instructions as well as charts. Use whichever one works best for you.

Gauge is not so crucial for this design, but if your gauge differs from the pattern gauge, the dimensions of your blanket will be different as well. The pictured blanket was made with DK weight yarn, but the pattern can easily be worked in sports, worsted, aran, fingering or lace weight yarn too

YARN, (sample shown on page 1):
Aade yarn (8/2), (100% wool, Solid), fingering
100 gr (3.53 oz) - 400 m (437 yds)
Yarn hanks weight between 150 gr/ 5.25 oz. – 300 gr / 10.5 oz. Aade is our local lambswool yarn.

YARN CONSUMPTION:
MC yarn: approx. 0.8 skeins (150 gr / 5.25 oz - 600 m / 656 yds) Aade yarn colorway Yellow,
CC yarn: approx. 0.7 skeins (140 gr / 4.9 oz – 560 m / 613 yds) Aade yarn colorway Light Grey
Or use any other fingering/sport weight yarn. Sample weighs approx. 290 gr / 10.24 oz.
Note that if you use different weight yarn or different needle size, the yardage, weight and dimensions of your blanket may differ from mine.

NEEDLES: 3.00mm (US 2 ½ ): DPNs, 60cm/24“ and 100cm/40“ or longer circular needle, or size needed to get the right gauge. 2 or even 3 circular needles may be needed to accommodate the large number of stitches. Magic loop method can be used for knitting the beginning sections in the round.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Approx 118 cm / (46“) diameter (corner to corner). Measurements taken from relaxed fabric after blocking.

OTHER TOOLS: 3.5mm (US E) crochet hook for cast on, stitch markers (only 1 is required, but if you wish, you can use 4 additional markers for the corners); tapestry needle; scissors; round counter (if needed); blocking tools (wires and pins).

GAUGE: 17 sts x 21 rounds = 10 cm / 4“ in two-color brioche stitch pattern after blocking.
Needle sizes are recommendations only. Always use the needle size necessary to achieve given gauge (to save your time). (My personal knitting tension is tight).

TECHNIQUES USED: Brioche in the round, brioche decreases/increases (brkyobrk, brk1, brp1, sl1yo), k1, p1, kfb, kfbf, SSK, K2tog, Sl1K2togP, I-cord Bind-off.

SKILL LEVEL: Adventurous beginner or intermediate knitter. Previous experience of working basic two-color Brioche is not required, but it is recommended.
