Tvid
This comfy cardigan is inspired by the “tweedy” look of using 2 different coloured strands of plötulopi. Tvíd is Icelandic for tweed: choose your colours with not too much contrast for a tweed effect! The Icelandic plötulopi is unspun roving and the traditional material for making the lopapeysa. In this case it is used double on relatively large needles (8mm, US 11), which makes it nice and airy for this long cardigan, but strong enough to last a good while. You could even use up all your left over plötulopi into one colourful long cardie!
This is a top-down construction starting with the rounded hood in garter stitch. With or without hood there is a well fitting neck line that will keep your cardigan on your shoulders! The cardigan is then worked back and forth in stockinette stitch, button bands and buttonholes are made as you go - and very little finishing work is left after you bind off.
Sleeves are knit in the round. Raglan increases make this pattern easily adjustable for your body shape. The top down method lets you try it on along the way and adjust the fit to your liking and preferred length.
Size S, M, (L, XL, XXL):
Pick a size that is approx. 15cm wider than your body measurement (positive ease).
Body of cardigan circumference at chest:
95, 105, (113, 120, 126) cm/ 37.4, 41.3, (44.5, 47.2, 49.6) inches.
The plötulopi is held double throughout, it is easiest to go by weight rather than meterage:
Amount will depend a lot on the length of your cardigan; length = from under arm to bottom edge of cardie (not overall length). 10 cm extra length will need approx. 40 – 60 gr. Depending on size. Note that the dyed plötulopi weighs a little more per m. The hood needs approx. 50 gr. and is included in weight:
S = 550/ 650 gr ( l= 70/ 95 cm under arm)
M = 600/ 730 gr ( l= 70/ 95 cm under arm)
L = 650/ 750 gr ( l= 70/ 95 cm under arm)
XL =680/780 gr ( l= 70/ 95 cm under arm)
XXL= 700/850 gr ( l= 70/ 95 cm under arm)
Buttons: 7 buttons of 2,5cm /1 inch diameter. I recommend Icelandic fish skin buttons from: www.rod.is or on fb: rodbuttons
