Twigs on the left and Gravel on the right are two highly textured triangular shawls. Every row begins with the same sequence and ends with a double increase to form the triangle. These pieces exhibit one of the “miracles” of sequence knitting: the patterns are the same, except Twigs is worked over an even number of stitches, while Gravel is worked over an odd number of stitches.

The Twigs pattern is a grid of diamonds with 1x1 ribbing in the diamonds while Gravel is the same grid but with seed stitch in the diamonds.

The yarn in the samples and the swatches is Catherine Lowe’s spectacular Merino 5.

Since these shawls are tip up triangles, they can be worked in any gauge. In Catherine Lowe’s DK weight worked firmly (e.g. on size 5 (3.75 mm) vs. size 6 (4.00 mm) needles), 800 y makes a generous shawl. if using a different yarn, swatch to determine the right needle size to achieve the desired stitch definition and drape.
