Winter is here, and all the beautifully coloured leaves of the trees have fallen. Suddenly I see the structures of each bush and tree so clearly; the evergreens and the buxus are dominating, but looking closer there are so many lovely branches and twigs to admire. These are the inspiration behind my new hat.

Design and construction
The hat is worked bottom-up and in-the round, starting from a short brim, followed by the main-body in pattern, reminding of the twigs and branches of winter.
The crown of the hat is worked in pattern.
All stitch-patterns are charted, as well as written out.

Size
The hat is one-size. The circumference of the hat is 44 cm/17.5”, after washing/blocking, and unstretched.
The height of the hat, from cast-on to bind-off is 23 cm/9”. The texture of the hat gives a very good stretch, and the hat will suit most heads from 20” – 23”.
You can modify the width by working at a looser/tighter gauge. The height can be modified by adding/subtracting rounds of ribbing.

Materials
Yarn: I recommend a worsted weight yarn with great stitch-definition that knits up to gauge. I used Lark from Quince & co., in the colourway Frost, to work my hat. This worsted weight yarn comes in skeins of 50 gr/1.76 oz, and 123 m/134 yards. Of this specific yarn you will need approximately 150 m/164 yards to work the hat. Needles: the brim is worked using a circular needle, 40 cm/16”, 3.5 mm/US4, the main body is worked using a circular needle, 40 cm/16”, 4 mm/US6, the crown of the hat is worked using a set of dpn’s, 4 mm/US6.
Use needle size to obtain gauge. You will not be needing a cable needle to work the twisted sts. Notions: a removable stitch-marker, tapestry needle, blocking tools.

Gauge
Gauge is measured over the pattern, after washing/blocking, and unstretched. 10 x 10 cm/4 x 4” = 27 sts and 28 rounds, using needles 4 mm/US6. As a guideline I had 20 sts and 28 rounds when working in stockinette sts using the same needle size.
The pattern instructs you on how to swatch in pattern.

The pattern
The pattern is charted, as well as written out round-by-round.
The shaping of the crown is charted as well as written out, with stitch-counts for every decrease round.
Measurements are in cm’s as well as in inches.
There are instructions on how to swatch in the stitch-pattern.
Skill level: intermediate.
