I use Katia Twisted Paint for this, but any yarn that works with 6mm needles will be fine.
This hat + bobble uses about half a cake.

I prefer a 40cm circular needle, but if you like DPN’s then they are good too.

The main hat is a 3 repeat of a 24 stitch pattern. I like using stitch markers for ease after each repeat.
