Twīnende & Twinnende Socks
Loosely transliterated from Middle English, ‘twīnende and twinnende’ is “converging and diverging”; much like the twisted-stitch lines that make up the main motif in this pattern. For bonus points ‘twīnende’ also means ‘to form yarn’ and is where we get the word ‘twine’ from. These socks are a relaxing knit with a simple stitch pattern; they are toe up with a modified wedge toe, a Fleegle heel and a baby folded-hem cuff.
The pattern contains technique illustrations, a ‘how to’ for working this pattern off gauge, both charts and written instructions, handy tips and tricks, and there’s even a little something in there for medieval marginalia connoisseurs! There’s a colourful version, a black and white version for printing, and also a print disability and screen reader friendly version. This pattern has been tested and tech edited.
Sizing
Sizes: 1 (2, 3) (4, 5)
Finished Measurements: 14.5 (17, 19.5) (22, 24.5)cm or 6 (7, 8) (9, 10)” foot circumference.
To Fit: 16.5 (19.5, 22) (25, 27.5)cm or 6½ (7¾, 8¾) (10, 11)” foot circumference.
If you are between sizes, I suggest sizing down, as the Twīnende and Twinnende stitch pattern is quite stretchy.
Techniques and Difficulty
Short rows, twisted-stitches, increasing and decreasing, grafting, reading your knitting. I think this is very doable for anyone who’s knit a pair of socks before.

The sample is in a handspun, heavy fingering weight (18–20 wraps per inch) yarn, made with 3 plies.
Gauge
32 stitches x 48 rounds = 10cm or 4” in stockinette stitch after blocking

2.25mm (US 1) needles in your favourite sock knitting needle configuration, or size needed to get gauge.
