Twist And Slouch
Sometimes you just reach for a really uncomplicated urban accessory to complete your outfit, or, just for comfort’s sake. This is that hat: perfectly simple and with a neat professional finish. The tight fabric gauge is smooth and flexible but keeps the warmth in and will hold its shape well. Show off your favourite DK 8ply yarn, and maybe complement it with a faux fur pompom - or not!
Uses approx 1 skein of DK 8ply merino/wool or a fancy blend. The samples used 200-220yd of Happy-Go-Knitty “sinam” which is a merino-silk-yak blend yarn, in the colours “driftwood” and “my favourite jeans”.
You will need 2.5mm and 3mm circular needles on a 40cm cable; and a longer cable or DPNs in 3mm size to work the crown decreases. An italian tubular cast on is used for a neat brim edge with an extra step to set up the work for 2x2 twisted ribbing.
Size is designed to fit most teen/adults: with the long ribbed brim and slouchy top it’s very adaptable. Approx 23cm wide at brim and 26cm tall after gentle blocking. Wear super slouchy and long or fold the brim however you like to reduce the slouch for your personal tastes. (TIP - If you don’t plan to fold the brim, you can just twist the knit stitches only when you work the ribbed section - makes it a bit faster to knit!).
ERRATA: the website with the italian tubular cast on has changed all its links: here is the correct URL for that tutorial - https://knitfreedom.com/knitting-video/italian-tubular-in...
