You will start out doing a 2 x 2 rib, a couple of knit rows and then go into a spiral pattern, ending with a decreased top. Add a pompom and finish off normally. If you stay with the pattern instructions you can change up the needle size to open up the finished size. Experiment with different weights of yarn. I like to use 7’s, 8’s and 9’s with worsted medium weight yarn. If you go below 7’s you will get into baby hat sizes which is fun too.
