Twisting Waters is an elegant all-over lace shawl that is fun and deceptively easy to knit.

Most crescent shawls are worked either top down or bottom up, and the lace edging is often picked up and worked sideways.

For Twisting Waters, the whole shawl is worked sideways from tip to tip and you knit the edging as you go, to give an almost-crescent shape. You begin and end with just 3 stitches so there are no long cast-ons or bind-offs. And since you don’t need to pick up stitches for a knitted-on edging, you never cut your yarn and you have fewer ends to weave in!

My inspiration for this design comes from the sight of water flowing smoothly over pebbles in a stream. As I watched, I saw that every now and then, the moving streams of water twisted into long, curving lines. Since then, I’ve noticed that there are twisting lines wherever water flows - even in the stream of water from a tap! Nature is endlessly elegant.

In the attractive body pattern, gently curving lines of twisted stitches define the streams of flowing water. Yarn overs add lightness and drape to the fabric. The leaf edging represents leaves that fall on the surface of the water and are peacefully carried along by the current.

I hope this shawl brings you the same peaceful, enjoyable knitting it brought to me.
