Two Color Cowl For Chris
A unisex, slipstitch cowl with a drawstring
I designed this cowl for my nephew, Chris, who moved back to Maine, where his heart is. I wanted a cowl that he could wear up close to his neck for those cold Maine temperatures. But I like the idea of having the option to wear it loose.
This versatile cowl is knit from the bottom, starting with a hem to complement the casing at the top for the drawstring.
The slip stitch pattern for the body is fun and easy to do (no chart needed).
Techniques included are a provisional cast on, picking up stitches, M1, K2tog, SSK, 3 needle bind off, and
I-cord. I give suggestions on how to do a very easy provisional cast on if you haven’t done one before and a link to a video on my favorite method. All other techniques are explained.
Skill level: Intermediate.
I have included instructions for a DK weight version.
Substitute yarns: any worsted weight yarn should
work; most of the 400yds (total) was used in this project.
DK weight yarn: about 440yds (total) was used
Finished size is approximately 30 inches around and 12 inches deep.
If you are not experienced in all of the techniques included, take this opportunity on a small project to learn something new.
Combine some of those stray skeins you might have laying around and have fun. Use your handspun, dimensions are not critical. Or use that luxury yarn you have been saving, waiting for a special project.
Warning: it’s a little addicting. I have made four already!
