This pattern is designed to carry the yarn throughout the scarf, so you won’t be weaving in lots of ends.

Since I first posted this pattern I’ve had some insights that make it easier to knit. I’ve written improved instructions about how to do the stranded knitting and slip stitch rows. Since I’m a continental knitter, that’s how I wrote the instructions, but in addition to making some improvements for that, I also tried to make it simpler for english knitters (you’re the ones who wrap the yarn around the needle) . I also realized that adding a garter stitch border to the scarf would make the edges smoother because the yarn wouldn’t be carried on the edge of the blanket.

I haven’t rewritten the instructions here yet, but you might want to refer to my Garter Slip Stitch Scarf and Hat pattern or use it instead. The main difference between this pattern and the new pattern is that the older pattern has eyelet rows instead of 2 extra garter stitch rows at the beginning and end of each stripe.

The new scarf pattern doesn’t include instructions about the eyelet rows (Rows 15-19, 31-34 in the old pattern). For carrying the yarn in these rows, do a similar thing there to what you do in the stranded knitting and slip stitch rows. The eyelet section should extend only as far as the border.
