I’ve added the circular cast-on tutorial .PDF to this pattern purchase page as well! It may refer to flat-knit projects, so be sure to ignore that if you’re working on a project that is not knit flat.

Knit a granny-crochet-inspired cardigan!

This is a pretty well-established crochet structure, and this first take is a boxy cardigan with a wide size range. (It’ll fit smaller kids more loosely, but remains wearable as they grow, eventually ending up as a cropped jacket with 3/4 sleeves.)

In this context, the lace pattern works as a slightly crochet-ish one. You can use a self-striping yarn like Caron Cotton Cakes, a variety of Noro, or scraps to emphasize the granny-square references, while a cotton blend makes it more seasonal.

Note:This pattern was originally written for a kid’s size exclusively, and that’s what’s shown in the photos. But there are now two pattern .PDFs, the second of which includes a larger range for grownups! Yarn estimates are a bit broad for now.

Measurements:
As shown, this sweater is 29”/74cm from sleeve-tip to sleeve-tip, 14.5”/36cm across the body and from top to hem, and 7.5”/19cm from underarm to hem (and underarm to end of sleeve).

Materials:

  • 1 ball or 520-530 yds of Caron Cotton Cakes or similar yarn
  • 1 set of 5 DPNS and two 24”+ circular needles in US 8/5mm, or size needed for gauge.
  • 6 removable stitch markers
  • yarn-appropriate crochet hook, used for circular cast-on
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

If you don’t have two circular needles in the size you need to knit this, that’s all right—you can use a smaller circular to hold set-aside stitches. If you have an interchangeable needle set, this is an ideal use for it.

Gauge:
Gauge is 17 sts and 24 rows over 4”/10cm of stockinette stitch, worked in the round & gently blocked. Please be sure to check your gauge.
