There are two hat pattern stitches that will work with either hat band. One pattern stitch is a lacy open look for when you don’t need a lot of warmth but would like some style. The other pattern stitch is a cable-look knitted with only purl and knit stitches. It’s a warmer hat. Both patterns are easy. Mix and match the bands with the stitches.

There are many ways to get different styles from this one pattern. Use contrasting colors. Make the fitted hats into longer hats. Use your own stitch pattern after you knit the band.

Depending on the hat you choose to make you will need two of these needle sizes: For the short tie, you will need U.S. Size 7 straight or circular needles and U.S. Size 9 16-inch circular needles or dpns. For the long tie with the bow, you will need U. S. Size 5 straight or circular needles and U.S. Size 9 16-inch circular needles to hold 214 stitches.
