There are two finishings and a construction trick to this cowl. This design features balanced stripes to suit the season, and has an all-over stripes version (currently shown) and a colorblock variation (not shown).

This cowl is knit from contrasting colors—a darker MC in all my samples, plus a lighter/seasonal contrast color. The current featured sample is knit from Valley Yarns Colrain Lace in Charcoal as a main color and my own handspun merino/linen as a contrast.

Materials:

• Two skeins or about 30-50g each of Malabrigo Yarns sock or similar fingering-weight yarn in MC and CC, shown here in Black and Ochre
• 1 24-48” circular needle in US3/3.25mm, or size needed for gauge. Knitting is both flat and in the round, so if you have intermediate needle-lengths, that may work best! Otherwise, magic loop is a useful technique to make a longer needle work.
• 1 set of 5 DPNs in size needed for gauge
• 1 spare circular needle, 24-48”, in same size or one size down
• crochet hook for cast-on, 1.90mm or size suited to yarn
• Tapestry needle
• Removable stitch markers

Gauge:
Primary gauge is 22 sts and 34 rows over 4”/10cm of garter stitch, worked flat and blocked.
Secondary gauge is 22 sts and 32 rows over 4”/10cm of stockinette stitch, worked flat.

Measurements:
As shown, this cowl measures 10.5”/27cm tall and about 21”/54cm in circumference. Measured flat, if your gauge is perfect and matches the primary gauge the whole time, the cowl is virtually square when measured flat. If your gauge is looser when working flat and matches the secondary gauge, the longer side is 13”/33cm tall.
