Two Wrongs Make a Right
A fantastic way to use small quantities of leftover yarn - these versatile mittens can be made as a colorwork pattern, or as a texture pattern with just one skein of yarn.
Wear the simple inner mittens beneath the fun, textured fingerless gloves for maximum warmth. When puttering around a cool house or outside on a cool evening, wear the fingerless gloves by themselves!
The mitten pattern is a very simple in-the-round project. If you can knit in the round, work increases and do Kitchener stitch, you have the tools to be successful at making these mittens.
The fingerless gloves are an intermediate project that is knit flat (but if doing them in two colors, they much be knit on circular needles!) Techniques used are: knitting flat, slipping stitches, using 2 colors in a row, “carrying” yarn (“floats” are never longer than 3 stitches), increases, decreases, mattress stitch, and picking up stitches.
Video tutorial links are given for the increases I recommend using and for how to do mattress stitch.
The three sizes included are written for hand circumferences of 6.5” (7.75”, 9”). Those translate roughly to a child’s size - pre-puberty (a women’s size, and a men’s size). Since everyone in these 3 groups obviously have varying hand sizes from others in their own group, there are size modification instructions give in the pattern to customize your fit. The important thing is to choose the hand circumference that is closest to your own and go from there.
Many thanks to MargiBorck & gloryjj for testing this pattern and offering their valuable suggestions!
