Tyrolean Janker
This charming jacket for babies up to 24 months old is based on traditional “Janker” jackets of the Tyrol region, but the collar and cuffs have been given a slightly ruffled edge, reminiscent of Chanel jacket detailing.
An easy knit in garter stitch, this raglan sleeved janker is worked seamlessly from the top down, with sleeves and body worked individually after separating at the underarm. Button bands are knit in one with the body.
The Tyrol is an historical region in the Eastern Alps which spans parts of western Austria and northern Italy, and Tyrolean folkwear is similar to traditional German and Austrian clothing. The “Janker” is a folk jacket typically made of grey, green or red felted woollen material or garter stitch knitting. Contrast trimming around the edges and metal or horn buttons complete the quintessentially German folk look.
For your little one, this jacket will be adorable in traditional colours or typical baby pastels. Alternatively, go for a more modern take and use any colour combination you like, whether high contrast brights or a more subtle tone on tone choice of colours.
