The historic town of Fruita, within Capitol Reef National Park, is no longer inhabited by pioneers. But visitors can still pick ripe fruit from the lush orchards under the looming orange cliffs of the Waterpocket Fold. This artwork was produced under the Artist in Residence Program at Capitol Reef National Park.

These mitts are worked flat then sewn up the side leaving an opening for the thumb. You pick the details of these mitts. The colorwork can be knit using intarsia, stranded, or duplicate stitch, or a combination of any of them. Any parts of the colorwork can also be embroidered. For example, the apricots can be French knots, the apples can be cross-stitched, or the pears can be embroidered to make them more curved. You can also change out the cuffs. The simple ribbing can be changed to garter or seed stitch. Insert a bobble into a 2 x 2 rib, or just use stockinette stitch to let it curl. Use your imagination and U-pick the mitts you want!
