“Ubiquitous Kate” is my interpretation of the now-famous shawl worn by Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge. It’s a top-down triangular shawl sporting a zigzag texture stitch and a ruffle which extends around the entire shawl. Extra increases are used to make a shallower, curved triangle with long wings. After knitting the body of the shawl, stitches are picked up along the top edge, and the ruffle is worked in the round in your choice of 1×1 rib or stockinette.

The photo of the small swatch shows the stockinette ruffle option - it will be a little more ruffly than the 1x1 rib, but depending on the yarn used, may have a tendency to curl out. Be sure to use a yarn with a good drape.

Errata: The first version had errors in the written directions. Version 2, published 8 July 2011 is now available. If you downloaded it prior to that, go to your library PDFs, and click the “update” button on the pattern to get the new version. The updated version has “Revised 8 July 2011” in the upper right corner of the first page.

For Version 2, there is a small error in the written directions on Chart B (page 6). The instructions for working each RS row should end with k2, not with k1. The line should end with “K to last 3 sts, kfb, k2”. This will offset the kfb’s on the RS and WS, and look a little neater.
