Udakua is a Basque word, meaning “a thing for summer”. I learned it from one of my lovely test-knitters (you can find her gorgeous cardigan (and my other lovely testers:))as a project linked to my pattern Stellata).

My set for babies are meant for summer - but could be used as layering pieces all year around. It is such a cute pair - worked in stripes or a single color it looks lovely on a baby/toddler.

Construction
The dress: is worked top down, starting from the shoulder-straps and flap for back, followed by the flap for front. Both flaps are joined and the body is worked in the round. Regular increases are made at center-front/center-back to give the dress its A-line shape that is both very girlish as well as comfortable.
The pants: are worked top-down starting from the ribbed edging and eyelet-row (if you want to join in an elastic ribbon). The upper back is shaped by short-rows to give extra room for diapers.
There are increase rows to make more room as well before work is divided and both legs are worked separately.

Sizes The set could be worked in 6 sizes: 3/6/9/12/18/24months.
Keep in mind that babies differs a lot size-wise - AND grows fast!
It could be a good idea to work a larger size from the start.
Bust measurement - dress/ waist-measurement - pants:
15.75/17/17.75/19/20/21”

Gauge is measured over st st. 24sts/34rows = 10x10cm/4x4”

Material
I used “BabyBamboo” from Sirdar. This yarn comes in “balls” of 50gr/1.76oz and 95m/104yards.
To make the whole set you will need:
3/3/4/5/5/6 balls of MC
1/1/2/2/2/2 balls of CC1
1/1/2/2/2/2 balls of CC2
Knitting needles: for the dress as well as the pants: a small circular needle 3mm/US2.5, a set of dpns 3,,/US2.5 for the legs of the pants, straight needles 3mm/US2.5 for the shoulder-straps.
Choose needles according to gauge!
Notions: separate holders, stitch-markers, 2 buttons to match the button-holes.

Knitting skills
I think that an adventurous beginner would be able to make the set:)) There are a few techniques that you might find challenging: like the eyelet-row and the short-rows for the pants. Apart from that you should be able to work in the round and work simple stitch-patterns like seed-st (moss-st) and rib (k1, p1).

The pattern guides you through the dress and panties in a simple, comprehensible way, explaining the short-row technique. All stitch-counts are given. All measurements are given in both cm’s and inches.
